DKA is a life-threatening condition that develops when cells in the body are unable to get the sugar (glucose) they need for energy, such as when you are diabetic and do not take enough insulin. When the cells do not receive sugar, the body begins to break down fat and muscle for energy. When this happens, ketones (fatty acids) are produced and enter the bloodstream, causing the chemical imbalance celled diabetic ketoacidosis.
This can happen with people who have litte or no insulin in their bodies (mostly people with type 1) but it can happen with type 2 diabetes as well when the blood sugar levels are high.
Helpful Tip: Urine dipstick test kits and/or a ketone meter may be used at home to confirm a diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis.
When severe, DKA must be treated in the hospital. If left untreated, there is a risk of coma and even death.
If an individual is unconscious and cannot swallow, CALL 911 immediately. A GLUCAGON emergency kit must be used immediately! A glucagon emergency kit consists of a syringe filled with liquid that needs to be mixed with a powder. It is a natural hormone that sends a message to the liver or muscles to release stored sugar into the bloodstream. A glucagon emergency kit is ONLY used in the case of a SEVERE Hypoglycemic emergency (seizure, unconsciousness, inability to swallow).
